Andrew C. Corbin,
President/CEO
For 70 years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas has built a reputation of trust with our policyholders and members, contracting providers, elected officials and business partners. These relationships were not built in a day but rather through the hard work and dedication of countless employees since we first opened our doors for business in March 1942. Our current employees are committed to maintaining these relationships as we recognize they are the keys to our future success in a health care delivery system that is experiencing tremendous change.
We appreciate that you trust us to be your partner in one of life's most basic necessities: your health and well-being. Whether you need Blue Cross to cover your annual check-up, help you navigate services for a chronic condition or give you peace of mind during a major medical crisis, our mission is to be the insurer you trust with your health.
As we move toward a new health insurance marketplace, I pledge to you that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas will continue to maintain your trust by performing the activities that earned your trust in the first place:
During 2011, Blue Cross processed and paid 16.8 million claims totaling $2,040,165,625. We operated our business on less than 8 cents of a premium dollar, meaning more than 92 cents went to pay claims or build claims reserves for the future. Our strong underwriting performance allowed us to hold the line on premiums being issued during 2012. Our members who purchase their own coverage received no rate increase for 2012 other than the standard percentage attributable to increase in age. At the same time, many of our enrolled groups are receiving 2012 premiums that are less than what they paid in 2011 or, in many other cases, premiums are remaining flat.
