Employees actively participate in the quarterly blood donor events sponsored by the Community Blood Center. Recently, Blue Cross received recognitions for the 2008 Large Business Award and the 2008 Community Star Members.
The 2008 Large Business Award is given to the donating businesses in the community that have 200 or more employees. The 2008 Community Star Award is given to businesses that have collected 400 or more units of blood during 2008. BCBSKS was the only Topeka organization that received the Star Award for having the highest number of platelet donations the previous year. Platelets are the cells that help stop bleeding and are used for patients undergoing aggressive cancer treatments and other blood disorders. Of all blood components, demand has increased most rapidly for platelets.
During 2008, our employees donated 74 units of platelets and 456 units of whole blood. Blue Cross also supports the Community Blood Center through employee involvement on the Community Advisory Council.
Previously, the Volunteer Center of Topeka recognized Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas with the Business Based Volunteer Program of the Year award for the Corporate Life-saving Challenge of 2004. The Corporate Life-saving Challenge was designed to increase donations and raise awareness for the need of blood donors.
Blue Cross also was recognized each year from 2004 through 2006 as being the No. 1 corporate donor by number of units by the Community Blood Center. The company also received the Outstanding Pheresis Donor Support Award from the Community Blood Center in 2006.
