Blue in the Community - Blood Drives

Employees actively participate in the quarterly blood donor events sponsored by the Community Blood Center. Approximately 75 employees donate blood each quarter.

The Volunteer Center of Topeka recognized Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas with the Business Based Volunteer Program of the Year award for the Corporate Life-saving Challenge of 2004. The Corporate Life-saving Challenge was designed to increase donations and raise awareness for the need of blood donors.

Blue Cross also was recognized each year from 2004 through 2006 as being the No. 1 corporate donor by number of units by the Community Blood Center. The company also received the Outstanding Pheresis Donor Support Award from the Community Blood Center in 2006.

BCBSKS earned the first-ever Star of the Year award in 2008 for having the highest number of platelet donations the previous year. Platelets are the cells that help stop bleeding and are used for patients undergoing aggressive cancer treatments and other blood disorders. Of all blood components, demand has increased most rapidly for platelets. In 2007, BCBSKS employees donated 108 units of platelets.

In 2007, BCBSKS employees donated more than 350 units of whole blood.
