Project Topeka is an annual food and monetary drive to help feed Topekans in need. BCBSKS employees give many hours and generous contributions each year.
During the 2009 annual campaign, Topeka-based employees organized bake sales, garage sales, chili feeds, Sloppy Joe lunches, bid on premium parking spaces, held silent auctions and coordinated other special events to raise the funds.
Donations and fundraising activities raised $19,493 which was used to purchase 1,220 cases of vegetables and 100 cases of peanut butter, representing 14.16 tons of food. The bulk food purchase was arranged with the help of HyVee grocery store. BCBSKS employees also contributed an additional 1.05 tons of food. Food donated to Project Topeka is distributed through eight local emergency aid agencies.
The annual campaign takes place each February.
