For Allergy Sufferers

If you or a family member has ever received a prescription for a non-sedating antihistamine, you might recognize one or more of the brand names of these drugs as Claritin, Clarinex, Zyrtec and Allegra. These drugs are commonly used to treat allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose or watery eyes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently determined that the active ingredient in Claritin (loratadine) is safe and effective for sale over-the-counter without a prescription. This means you no longer have to see a doctor for a prescription in order to get relief from allergy symptoms. Not only can this save you time, it can save you the expense of an office visit. And, in some cases, the cost of the product can actually be less than your prescription drug copayment.

Currently, there are at least two products available over-the-counter which contain the active ingredient loratadine — and in the same strength which was previously available only by prescription. These are Claritin and Alavert.

Because these two drugs are now available without a prescription, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas no longer provides prescription drug coverage for Claritin products. This change was effective Dec. 20, 2002.

Important: If you are currently using a prescription antihistamine, talk to your doctor before switching to Alavert. Only your doctor can decide if Alavert should replace your prescription.

If you would like additional information on Alavert or would like to receive money-saving coupons, visit their Web site at www.alavert.com.
