National Provider Identifier Contingency Plan – Stage 2 to be Implemented January 1, 2008

Stage 2 of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas NPI contingency plan will be implemented January 1, 2008.

This means that the primary provider fields on all claims received by BCBSKS starting January 1, 2008 must include an NPI (can be either NPI only or NPI with legacy provider number). Claims received on or after that date that show only a legacy provider number will be rejected/returned to the provider.

  • Applies to all new and corrected claims, electronic and paper.
  • Applies to all claims received starting January 1, 2008.  Service date is not a factor.
  • The fields that are considered primary provider fields are billing, pay-to and rendering.

For complete details about the BCBSKS NPI contingency plan and procedures, please refer to our June 15, 2007 newsletter.

NOTE: Providers may, but are not required to, submit NPIs in the secondary provider fields until May 23, 2008. Until then, you can continue to report UPINs or NPIs. UB-04/837I fields that are considered secondary provider fields are attending provider, operating physician and other provider.
