Clarification on Reporting of Admission Date and Statement Covers Period and Present on Admission (POA) Indicator system issue corrected

The National Uniform Billing Committee (NUBC) recently clarified their definition for the reporting of Admission Date and Statement Covers Period elements on claims. Changes have been made to allow the inpatient admission date to be after the statement from date in order to comply with the NUBC.  BCBSKS will begin accepting claims in accordance with NUBC’s definition as stated below.

The Admission Date and Statement Covers Period are two distinctly different data elements:

In adherence to the new definition, BCBSKS is removing system edits that currently require:

  1. The Admission Date not be later than the “From” date on initial provider inpatient claims.
  2. The number of days in the Statement Covers Period is equal to the total accommodation days reported in the revenue code section.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) systems have been changed to allow inpatient claims to be processed without these requirements from our providers.

Recently, BCBSKS identified a problem with the Present on Admission (POA) indicators not being displayed in our internal systems, even though claims were submitted by providers with the POA indicators present.  Changes have been implemented and the problem has been corrected.  We apologize for any convenience this has caused for our providers.

If you have questions regarding either of these issues, please contact your BCBSKS Provider Representative.
