Premier Blue

How the Program Works

Provider Premier Blue is based on the “primary care physician” (PCP) concept. With Premier Blue you agree to select and coordinate your care with a PCP.

Premier Blue directs network PCPs to use their best medical judgment when managing care. This includes using physician assistants and making referrals to the most appropriate contracting Premier Blue specialists for medically necessary services.

If a patient wants a referral to a noncontracting referral specialist, the PCP must support the medical necessity of the treatment and have it prior approved in advance by Premier Blue. Note: Your PCP cannot approve a referral to another provider after services have been received.

If you need medical care after your PCP’s office hours have ended for the day, do not automatically go to the hospital emergency room. Always contact your PCP before you seek care, unless it is for a medical emergency.

For more detailed information about how Premier Blue works, please see the Member Handbook.
