Blue Select is an innovative point-of-service (POS) program that gives members the cost-savings and convenience of managed care, along with the added flexibility and freedom of choice offered through traditional health care insurance.
With Blue Select, members are encouraged to choose a primary care physician (PCP) to manage and coordinate care. All services must be provided or authorized in advance by the PCP for the member to receive maximum benefits. Members may select one PCP for the entire family or, if they prefer, separate PCPs for each eligible family member.
Blue Select offers added flexibility. If members elect to receive care from a doctor other than their PCP, on a "self-referral" basis, Blue Select still provides benefits. However, members will be responsible for a deductible and a larger out-of-pocket maximum (coinsurance) amount.
No referral is needed for the following services, which are paid at the highest benefit level: maternity (family coverage only), newborn care (first 31 days of life), well woman care, dental (accidental), limited oral surgery and medical emergency treatment.
