What is Insurance?

In its most basic sense, insurance can be described as the money you and others pay, that is then pooled together and used to cover certain expenses, should that occur.

Health insurance follows this same premise. You pay a premium, and health care costs that you incur are then covered according to the specifics of your policy. And, since most insurance plans don't cover health care for medical problems or conditions that start before the moment you have your policy, the time to get health insurance is before you have an accident, suffer a serious illness or discover you're pregnant.

If you don't currently have a health insurance plan, you will want to consider the average costs for medical care in Kansas. One of the most valuable benefits of having Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) health coverage is the discount you receive every time you use a contracting provider. Collectively, these discounts saved our members more than $1.48 billion in 2007! Here's how: Providers who contract with BCBSKS agree to accept the company's allowance as payment in full and agree not to bill our members for the balance of their charges. You start saving immediately.
