Corbin Selected as Next President/CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas
Andrew C. Corbin will bring more than 30 years of health insurance sales and management experience to his new position as president/CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas when he is promoted Oct. 1. The company's board of directors announced today that Corbin will replace Michael M. Mattox, who plans to retire after more than 35 years with the company, including the past five as president/CEO.
Corbin currently serves as vice president of external sales and provider affairs. He will become the seventh president/CEO in the company’s 65-year history. The 57-year-old Corbin joined BCBSKS in 1987.
"The board is appreciative of both Mike's dedicated tenure with Blue Cross and that he notified us approximately a year ago of his desired timeline for retirement," said James M. Alley, III, D.D.S., a Wichita-area oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is chairman of the board. "We were able to conduct a thorough and thoughtful search, and are confident that we picked the right person to guide this company into a new era of health care delivery."
Mattox said he is comfortable turning leadership of the company over to Corbin, whom he hired in 1987 to serve as the company's director of sales.
"I have a high level of confidence in Andy," Mattox said. "He has become completely familiar with the day-to-day operations of this company during the past 20 years, and also brings work experience with other Blue plans and insurance companies, as well as a deep understanding of the health insurance market in Kansas."
Corbin considers Mattox a mentor from whom he has learned much.
"Mike recruited me 20 years ago to come to the Kansas plan and I've had the opportunity to learn something from him every time we've talked during that span," Corbin said. "Kansans as a whole are fortunate that Blue Cross has a 65-year history of strong leadership. We are currently enjoying a 17-year high in enrollment, are financially strong and possess a deep sense of corporate responsibility to our members and our communities.
"The six people who have held this position before me have set a high standard that I am committed to carrying forward with the assistance of our 1,800 employees," he said.
When Corbin joined BCBSKS in 1987, he already had 13 years of sales and management experience under his belt. After a brief stint as a teacher and coach, Corbin served six years as sales manager for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. He later served five years as district sales director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and two years as director of marketing for Humana Insurance Co.
At BCBSKS, Corbin was promoted to vice president of marketing, provider relations and reimbursement in 2001. In 2004, he took on additional duties as president of two of the company's subsidiaries – Advance Insurance Company of Kansas, a life and disability insurance company, and Premier Health, Inc., an HMO subsidiary.
Corbin is a native of Alva, OK; he was raised in Liberal and has spent the majority of his life in Kansas. Corbin earned a bachelor's in education from Wichita State University in 1972. He and his wife, Robin, have four adult children and two grandchildren.
He has been a member of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce for 20 years, and also has been active in Sales & Marketing Executives of Topeka. He has served as a board member for March of Dimes and the Sunflower Soccer Association. Other community organizations he has been involved with include the American Heart Association, Boy Scouts of America and Christmas in April.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. BCBSKS is the state's largest health insurer, serving all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte.
