Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Expands Portfolio with New Long-term Care Product

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is expanding its portfolio of insurance offerings to include LTC Blue™, a long-term care product designed to help individuals protect their assets and secure their independence.

Long-term care assists people who cannot perform essential daily activities on their own because of age, chronic illness or degenerative condition. Long-term care can be provided in a variety of places – at home, an assisted living facility, nursing home or other setting. It covers "custodial care" or assistance with daily activities rather than medical care. The American Society on Aging estimates that 70 percent of Americans age 65 and older will need some form of long-term care.

"For 66 years Kansans have been able to equate security and dependability with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, and our new LTC Blue extends that tradition," said Graham Bailey, vice president of corporate communications and public relations. "LTC Blue is designed to provide security and dependability for that time in many of our lives when we require some level of assistance from others on a daily basis."

Bailey said many consumers see purchasing long-term care insurance as "the smart thing to do because they have seen others spend their life savings on long-term care services or burden their children with the cost of their care. As Baby Boomers have assumed caregiver roles for their aging parents we've learned first hand that providing long-term care is an expensive proposition," he said.

LTC Blue has three benefit levels. Rates are based on an applicant's age at the time he or she applies. LTC Blue policyholders can choose a benefit amount between $75,000 and $1,000,000 with monthly benefits of 1 percent, 2 percent or 3 percent of the benefit. A quote calculator at www.bcbsks.com is available to help individuals estimate their premiums.

For more information, including exclusions and reductions or limitations and the terms under which the policy may be continued in force, see the information on this site. To speak with an LTC Blue specialist, please call 1-800-522-8536.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. BCBSKS is the state's largest health insurer, serving all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte.
