Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Earns American Heart Association Award for Being a Fit-Friendly Company
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas has received the Gold Start! Fit-Friendly Company award from the American Heart Association. The award recognizes employers who demonstrate leadership in promoting employee health.
To be considered for the Gold award, an organization must offer employees physical activity support; increase healthy eating options at work; promote a wellness culture; implement at least six activities in the area of physical activity; at least two nutrition activities; and at least one culture activity.
"This award is a testament to the commitment Blue Cross has made to championing the health of its employees as well as that of all Kansans," said Graham Bailey, vice president of corporate communications and public relations. "We are pleased the AHA has recognized our efforts to provide a Fit-Friendly workplace and applaud all our employees who have taken steps to live healthy lives."
BCBSKS implemented a wellness campaign in 2008 focused on encouraging employees to move more, achieve and maintain a healthy weight, and be aware of the affect their daily lifestyle choices have on their health. The company also offers employees a tobacco-free work place, Weight Watchers at Work program, online health assessments, cholesterol screenings, flu vaccines, on-site fitness facility and walking maps.
Marlou Wegener, manager of community relations, and Terri Janda, corporate health services administrator, accepted the award on behalf of BCBSKS.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. BCBSKS is the state's largest health insurer, serving all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte.
