Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation Donates $34,700 to Schools through Healthy Habits for Life Grant Program
Thirty-five school nurses or program administrators from across the state are recipients of Healthy Habits for Life grants from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation, and are using the funds this school year to promote healthy lifestyle choices to their students. The foundation has distributed $34,712.92 this fall, boosting the total monies granted during the two-year existence of the program to more than $68,000.
“For a second year, the foundation's board of directors was so pleased with the quality of the grant requests that it decided to fund all requests, surpassing the original commitment it had made of $25,000," said Graham Bailey, chief operating officer of the foundation. "Collectively, the programs these recipients are putting in place with their Healthy Habits for Life grant monies will help thousands of Kansans kids reduce their cardiovascular risk, increase their physical activity or learn healthy eating habits. If we can instill such healthy habits while kids are in school, they will be healthier adults in the future."
The renewal of the grant program was announced July 2007 in Wichita during the 18th Annual Statewide Conference of the Kansas School Nurse Organization (KSNO). The amount of each grant was based on the applicant’s request for the program he or she proposed, up to a maximum of $1,000. The tax-exempt school district or private school must be located in the service area of the BCBSKS Foundation (all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte).
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. BCBSKS is the state's largest health insurer, serving all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte.
