Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation Donates Nearly $40,800 to Schools through Healthy Habits for Life Grant Program

Forty-two school nurses or teachers from across the state are sharing $40,798.24 in Healthy Habits for Life grants from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation. The grant dollars were distributed earlier this fall to fund programs during the 2008-09 academic year that help Kansas kids reduce their cardiovascular risk, increase their physical activity or learn healthy eating habits.

The BCBSKS Foundation launched the Healthy Habits for Life grant program in 2006 and has now disbursed more than $100,000 in grants. The programs created with those grant monies have touched thousands of Kansas children, their families and communities, according to Graham Bailey, chief operating officer of the foundation.

“The foundation's board of directors is encouraged by the growth in the number of applications that we have received and were pleased to fund all the requests for 2008-09 monies,” Bailey said. “The foundation is grateful to be able to assist school nurses improve the health of Kansas kids.”

The renewal of the grant program was announced July 2008 in Wichita during the 19th Annual Statewide Conference of the Kansas School Nurse Organization (KSNO). The amount of each grant was based on the applicant’s request for the program he or she proposed, up to a maximum of $1,000. The tax-exempt school district or private school must be located in the service area of the BCBSKS Foundation (all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte).

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. BCBSKS is the state's largest health insurer, serving all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte.
