National Walk @ Lunch Day® April 24 Promotes Importance of a Walking Habit in Overall Health

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas hosting events in Topeka, Salina, Wichita

Kansans who want to start walking towards better health have a great opportunity to take the first steps to embarking on a daily walking program April 24 during National Walk @ Lunch Day®. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is sponsoring this seventh annual walking event to remind Kansans that walking is one of the easiest and most effective forms of exercise, and to encourage busy Kansans to find 30 minutes a day to walk.

A brisk, 30-minute walk five times a week can reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and be a positive influence on heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.

National Walk @ Lunch Day is designed to fit into – not compete with – one’s daily schedule by encouraging Kansans to incorporate walking into their lunch routine. BCBSKS and its employees are organizing special National Walk @ Lunch Day events in Topeka, Salina and Wichita, and are inviting others to join them. Each walk begins at noon – rain or shine!

In Topeka, nearly 600 BCBSKS employees are expected to join hundreds of other downtown workers at a rally and walk that begins at noon on the north grounds of the Kansas Judicial Center. The first 300 participants who stop by the BCBSKS table at the event will receive a free NW@LD T-shirt.

In Salina, BCBSKS employees and other participants will gather at Campbell Plaza at noon for a short rally followed by a walk along Santa Fe Ave. The first 150 participants in Salina will receive a free NW@LD T-shirt.

In Wichita, BCBSKS employees and other walkers will gather in front of the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce at noon before embarking on a one-mile walk along the river. The first 250 participants who stop by the BCBSKS table in front of the Chamber will receive a free NW@LD T-shirt.

Businesses, schools, hospitals or other organizations that would like to organize their own walks April 24 can find numerous tools – such as flyers, posters, postcards and email templates – at www.bcbsks.com.

Last year, National Walk @ Lunch Day drew tens of thousands of participants in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. It is a component of WalkingWorks®, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association physical activity program to help Americans live healthier lives and reduce unnecessary medical costs due to physical inactivity. The WalkingWorks program was developed in partnership with the Presidents Council on Physical Education and Sports.
