Turn off paper SOCPs

You can help support those affected by cancer while preventing paper waste

You can help protect the environment, reduce health insurance administrative expenses and save time while donating to a worthy cause by joining Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas' "turn off the paper" initiative.

For each member who decides to receive their summary of claims processed (SOCP) statements online in 2009, BCBSKS will donate $1 to the American Cancer Society. The organization is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering through research, education, advocacy and service.

Besides receiving your summary information faster, opting to receive you SOCPs online is good for the environment because it reduces waste; it helps Blue Cross lower paper and postage expenses; and it helps the American Cancer Society in its efforts against a disease that claims an estimated 1,500 American lives every day.

Walk @ Lunch Day

Tie on your walking shoes and join BCBSKS for National Walk @ Lunch Day

Looking for ways to become more physically active? If so, you have a great opportunity awaiting you April 29 during National Walk @ Lunch Day. BCBSKS, together with Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies across the country, has set aside this day as a reminder to members to incorporate exercise into their busy schedules.

In Topeka, many of our employees will be joining hundreds of other folks for a rally at the state capitol and a walk around the capitol grounds. You can participate in the day by organizing a 20- or 30-minute walk for your employees during the lunch hour or simply by encouraging them to get out and move more.

Legislative update

Health insurance among top priorities at Kansas Statehouse during the 2009 legislative session

Sunee Mickle, director of government relations at BCBSKS, monitors legislative activity and provides an overview of the priorities during the 2009 legislative session. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas aims to be available as a resource to legislators on health insurance issues and to express our concern to them on any proposed legislation which likely would raise the cost of health insurance for our members.

You can read an entire summary of the health care-related bills that were addressed during the 2009 session at: http://www.bcbsks.com/news/LegislativeIssues/state.htm
