Summer Safety Tips: Fireworks safety

Storm kit

Independence Day celebrations bring together family, wonderful food, awe-inspiring firework displays, and the need to keep safety in mind at each fun-filled event.

Last year, right here in Kansas, 197 fireworks injuries were documented during the week of July 4. Please prioritize these tips from State Fire Marshal Doug Jorgensen when making your holiday plans:

  • Purchase high-quality fireworks from a reliable, legitimate source.
  • Never give fireworks to small children.
  • Always wear eye protection.
  • Never ignite fireworks indoors.
  • Have a source of water handy, in case of fire.
  • Light only one firework at a time.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
