BCBSKS to introduce COPD Healthy Options care management program on July 1

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) encompasses emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is a progressive disease that affects the lungs and makes it difficult to breathe, and while there is no cure for COPD, if managed properly complications can be reduced. A Healthy Options care management program is being created to help members who have COPD.

"Our goal of this new program is to provide information to help members with COPD relieve symptoms, slow the progress of COPD, stay active and improve overall health," says Dana Hammontree, quality improvement and care management manager.

Participating members receive one-one-one phone guidance and support from a certified nurse care manager regarding the importance of following the doctor's treatment plan, nutrition, diet, risk factors, medications and exercise.

If you have asthma, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure or COPD please call us toll-free at 1-800-520-3137 or visit to learn more about our Healthy Options care management programs.

Healthy Options is a free program designed to help members, ages 21 to 63, who have BCBSKS as their primary carrier. Participation in the program is voluntary and the member may elect to withdraw at any time.

Turn off paper SOCPs

You can help support those affected by lung disease while preventing paper waste

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is committed to keeping our members healthy while providing the most cost-effective health plans possible. You can help us do both in 2010 with an innovative program that helps members support those affected by lung disease while allowing us to reduce our administrative expenses.

For each member who chooses to receive his or her summary of claims processed (SOCP) statements online, we will donate $1 to the American Lung Association. The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research. In particular, the funds will remain locally as they go to support the Freedom from Smoking program. Freedom From Smoking (FFS) is a community based smoking cessation program that offers a supportive environment in which individuals can quit smoking.

Besides receiving your summary information faster, opting to receive your SOCPs online is good for the environment because it reduces paper waste; it helps Blue Cross reduce paper and postage expense; and it helps the American Lung Association in the fight for healthy lungs and healthy air.
