National Provider Identifier – Final Implementation on May 23, 2008

Starting January 1, 2008, BCBSKS began requiring a national provider identifier on all claims submitted and if one isn't included, the claim is rejected/returned to the provider.   We are pleased to tell you that the initial results of this change indicate an overwhelming provider readiness to submit accurate NPI information.

We are now cautiously looking forward to finalizing the NPI implementation process which mandates that starting May 23, 2008 the NPI number be the only identifier accepted on electronic or paper transactions. We challenge providers to continue to review and identify implementation processes and to work with your vendor/clearinghouse to insure continued NPI accuracy. Providers who are ready to conduct business with NPI only are encouraged to do so and we ask that you notify BCBSKS by contacting the provider relations department.

BCBSKS acknowledges the vastness of this project and we appreciate your commitment to a smooth and successful final transition to national provider identifier.
