Taking steps to a healthier you could be as easy as adding a 30-minute brisk walk to your daily routine. That is why Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, the state's largest health insurer, is encouraging Kansans to get up and on their feet to take a walk April 24 as part of National Walk @ Lunch Day.
The 13th annual National Walk @ Lunch Day is designed to encourage people to take a walk during their lunch break – or any time during the day – to start a healthy routine. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is hosting walking events in 11 communities April 24; all walks begin at noon. BCBSKS-led walks will take place in Dodge City, Garden City, Hays, Hutchinson, Independence, Lawrence, Manhattan, Pittsburg, Salina, Topeka and Wichita.
People are encouraged to join the walk nearest them or plan a group walking event in their community or at their workplace.
In addition to being a positive influence on some chronic conditions, walking briskly for 30 minutes most days of the week can help control weight, reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve muscle tone.
All BCBSKS-led National Walk @ Lunch Day events will happen rain or shine, and will begin at noon April 24 with a short rally followed by a 30-minute walk. A limited number of free T-shirts are available for participants at each location. Events will take place in:
Printable promotional materials for each location – such as flyers and email templates – are available at bcbsks.com/walk. Businesses, schools, hospitals or other organizations that would like to plan their own walks April 24 can find customizable promotional pieces at bcbsks.com/walk. The first 50 such organizations outside of the 11 official walk locations that register their walk information with Blue Cross can receive up to 20 free exercise towels to use as giveaways.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and is the state’s largest insurer, serving all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte.
