You deserve the best - We’re for Ellis and Pawnee Counties.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is continuing good-faith discussions to keep Hays Medical Center in network after the hospital announced plans to leave on Jan. 1, 2027.
Updated on Oct. 9, 2026
Our members deserve the best and with more than 95% of providers in network, we are committed to being your partner in health. Our goal is to compensate providers fairly while being good stewards of our members' health care dollars. But when we pay more, you pay more and provider demands must be reasonable.
We are disappointed that Hays Medical Center has decided to terminate their contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS), effective Jan. 1, 2027. This decision impacts several providers. We hope that Hays Medical Center will reconsider their termination notice and remain in network, ensuring our members experience no lapse in network coverage.

BCBSKS is committed to helping our members have broad access to affordable, quality health care choices close to home. If your provider chooses to go out of network in 2026, beginning Jan. 1, 2027, they will be considered out-of-network for BCBSKS members.
- BCBSKS members can still access in-network care at your provider through Dec. 31, 2026.
- Please review your Summary of Benefits and Coverage so you know what your responsibilities will be and whether your plan includes out-of-network coverage.
- If your plan has out-of-network coverage, BCBSKS will reimburse the member for covered services according to your benefits. You will pay the provider directly, including any deductibles, coinsurance or copayments, and you may be billed for amounts above what BCBSKS reimburses.
- If your plan does not cover out-of-network services, you will be responsible for 100% of the charges.
- After Dec. 31, 2026, your provider will no longer be able to access your benefits or eligibility information through BCBSKS systems or Customer Service. If you have questions about your benefits, BCBSKS will be available to help you directly.
- Emergency care: Emergency care will always be covered by BCBSKS with no out-of-network penalties.
- Serious and complex medical conditions: If you are currently undergoing treatment for serious and complex conditions, BCBSKS may allow services to be covered as in-network for up to 90 days as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act. Contact our Customer Service Center at 1-800-432-3990 (toll-free) or the number on the back of your insurance card to see if this applies to you.
- The following plan-specific considerations may apply.
- Medicare Supplement members: There will be no changes to the way you access in-network care through Hays Medical Center or Pawnee Valley Community Health. There is no impact to Medicare Supplement members as they can go to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Select members: Medicare Supplement Select members agree to use a Select network hospital for their planned in-patient hospital stays. These facilities do not participate in the Medicare Supplement Select network.
- Commercial/ACA/On-exchange members: If you purchased your plan on HealthCare.gov, you will no longer have coverage at the provider except for emergency care. If you choose to receive care at an out-of-network facility, you will have to pay 100% of the cost of care.
- Federal Employee Program retirees: If Medicare is your primary coverage (meaning it pays first) and you have Federal Employee Health Benefits and Postal Service Health Benefits Standard Option, we will continue to provide secondary coverage. If you have Basic Option or FEP Blue Focus, Medicare will pay its portion of your service; however, we will not pay as secondary.
We know having in-network care close to home is important for you. Thankfully, there are other options where you can transfer your care. We encourage you to visit our online directory for a listing of alternative contracting providers in your area. The provider directory can be accessed at: Find a Doctor/Hospital | Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (bcbsks.com). When searching, members will need to view the full provider profile and check the affiliated section to ensure the provider is not associated with the facility.
This means we are owned by our members, and we only exist to serve you. We do not have shareholders to pay or stock prices to worry about. That allows us to solely focus on doing what’s right for our members and our communities.
As a member, you are a co-owner of the company. Every dollar that comes to BCBSKS through premiums is either used to pay member claims, pay taxes, or cover operating expenses. Remaining funds are reinvested in the company and the communities we serve.
