Health equity

At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, we value you, your culture and community. By improving outcomes at both the individual and community levels, we’re committed to pursuing a more accessible, inclusive and equitable system that helps everyone reach their full health potential.

Why health equity matters

  • Health equity means making sure everyone has a fair chance to become as healthy as possible – no matter who they are, where they live or how much money they make.
  • Health equity acknowledges that different people need different support to achieve similar results.
  • Health equity creates a better, more affordable health care system that leads to better health outcomes for everyone.

Understanding health outcomes in Kansas

Recognizing each other’s strengths and challenges will help us work together to build a healthier Kansas. Here are just a few of the many factors that play a role in the health outcomes of Kansans:
28.2%
of Kansans live in rural areas that may face limited access to health care.
~1 in 5
Kansans are 65 years or older and may face chronic, complex and co-occuring health issues due to age.
1 in 10
Kansas families live each day with food insecurity resulting in a lack of quality and variety of food that can lead to chronic diseases.
3 of 10
Kansas seniors live alone in social isolation that can increase the risk of dementia, depression and anxiety.

Our work

Through voluntary data collection, research, partnerships and tailored programs, we aim to better understand our members' needs and deliver more effective support -- always with respect for privacy and individual choice.

Data collection and research

We use demographic data provided by our members to create better programs and services to address key health issues and improve the health of Kansas communities.

Partnerships

We partner with organizations and programs that share our goal of improving the health of Kansans like the Kansas Birth Equity Network and Baby Talk.

Member programs

BCBSKS programs like Wellness management and Strive+ wellness platform offer members additional support to manage health conditions and empower healthy lifestyles.

Reports

Understanding the extent and the nature of the health issue is a crucial part of health equity. Reports provide data and analysis to identify, understand and address health disparities.
