Interactive Metronome Therapy Considered Experimental/Investigational

Interactive Metronome Therapy (IMT) is a computer-based intervention focused on improving neural timing and rhythmic motor coordination. The program combines a consistent auditory metronome beat with structured motor responses such as hand clapping, finger tapping or foot movements. Client performance is measured with millisecond-level precision, and immediate auditory feedback is provided to reinforce timing accuracy.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) considers IMT experimental/investigational. Any drug, device or medical treatment or procedure and related services that are experimental or investigational as defined by BCBSKS are considered a provider write-off unless a Limited Patient Waiver is obtained before services are rendered.

For billing and reporting purposes, 97039 is the appropriate CPT code for IMT. Currently, there is insufficient credible evidence available that would support its use compared to the standard means of treatment or diagnosis.
