Seeing providers who are in your network means you save money with lower costs. You can find the name of your network on your member ID card.

Things you need to know

When you're experiencing an illness or an injury, you often have a choice between different types of care—primary, urgent or emergency. Understanding these types of care can help you save money and get the most from your health plan.

  • Primary care

See your primary doctor for everyday concerns.

    Visit your primary doctor for:

    • Sore throat
    • Fever
    • Earache
    • Cough

You can also see your primary care doctor for concerns about chronic health issues. If you need to see a specialist, your doctor can direct you to the appropriate facility or doctor.

  • Urgent care

If your primary doctor is unavailable for an appointment and you have an urgent health concern, visit your local urgent care center.

Visit your urgent care center for:

    • Flu-like symptoms
    • Minor cuts
    • Ear infections
    • Burns
    • Sprains
    • Simple fractures

You can also visit most urgent care centers during evening or weekend hours if you become ill or have minor injuries.

  • Emergency care

In case of a true emergency, always go to the nearest hospital.

    • Chest pain or pressure
    • Trouble breathing
    • Head trauma or concussion
    • Uncontrollable bleeding, vomiting or diarrhea
    • Sudden blurred or lost vision
    • Abdominal pain

If you are unable to get to a hospital but have one of the above smyptoms, dial 9-1-1.

Blue Distinction Center Facilities

Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality specialty care in the following areas, while encouraging health care professionals to improve the care they deliver:

  • bariatric surgery
  • cancer care
  • cardiac care
  • cellular immunotherapy
  • fertility care
  • gene therapy
  • knee and hip replacements
  • maternity care
  • spine surgery
  • transplants

Research shows that, compared to other providers, those designated as Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients. On average, Blue Distinction Centers+ also are 20 percent more cost-efficient than non-Blue Distinction Center+ designated providers.

For more information about the program and for a complete listing of the designated providers, visit bcbs.com/bluedistinction.
